PROJECT 375: When you wake up in the morning do you know what kind of day you are going to have?
Mindy: I never know what kind of day I will have; that’s one of the unpredictable things about PTSD, even if I wake up feeling good I never know what might happen in the day. On the other hand if I wake up after having night terrors or nightmares, it sets me up for a rough start. I always do my best to turn it around when I feel bad. I am fortunate to have a lot of great support from my husband Daniel. He helps me so much!
PROJECT 375: What is your favorite activity to do with your family?
Mindy: Playing & snuggling are my favorites! We have a 5 month old daughter Karma, it’s so much fun to watch her learning new stuff & exploring new things. The way she lights up when she sees her Daddy melts my heart. I love when we all play together, those two make me laugh so hard! I also love snuggles & the best is when Daniel & Karma both lay with their heads on my lap, although it usually ends with Karma throwing illegal knees to the back of Daddy’s head, hehehe.
PROJECT 375: How has being a mother impacted your journey?
Mindy: It has changed everything so much! A year before getting pregnant after consulting with a specialist who works with pregnant women on mental health medication, we decided it was best to try to get off all of my medications. It meant so much to try to give Karma the healthiest & most stress-free environment we could, so I did a ton of research to try to figure out how in the world to manage Complex PTSD, Major Depression & Anxiety naturally. It was not easy, a lot of trial & error & talk about putting DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) skills to the test. Good thing Daniel is such a great support system, he has been right by my side the whole time doing everything he can to make sure I am taken care of. We managed to work out most of the harder stuff before getting pregnant, which was a huge relief! Really I have Karma & Daniel to thank for me living a healthier life. If it wasn’t for them I would still be taking my pills, eating junk, drinking tons of caffeine, putting all sorts of chemicals in my body, being way too stressed out, and still be in a constant state of damage control. Now I can focus on trying to stay balanced the best I can. One of my fears is Karma being affected negatively because of my mental health so we work really hard everyday to be sure that doesn’t happen. She is the best motivation to live the happiest life I can and no pill in the world can do what our daughter does for me.
PROJECT 375: What is your favorite food or restaurant?
Mindy: Definitely our home made burger & fries, home made pizza, and ice cream. My love for cheddar cheese is also over the top, hehehe.
PROJECT 375: What does the future look like for you?
Mindy: We’ll hopefully buy Karma’s childhood home before she turns 1. Then we can really get settled in & make our home a real cozy, safe place for us to enjoy & relax. I also would like to keep sharing my experiences to help other people. For the most part I think the future looks pretty great. I have an amazing husband & daughter – I couldn’t ask for anything more.
PROJECT 375: What’s one thing you want people to know about you?
Mindy: There is nothing in the world that makes me happier than being Daniel’s wife & Karma’s mommy! It’s amazing what real love can do to a person!
