PROJECT 375: When you wake up in the morning do you know what kind of day you’re going to have?
DAISY ROMAN: I do at times. If I know I have a presentation that day or if I have a lot to do, I usually wake up anxious and I know that day might be a bad one. There’s other times when I wake up believing it will be a good day, but then something gets my anxiety level up happens and that can influence either part of the day or the rest of it.
PROJECT 375: What is your diagnosis?
DAISY ROMAN: My diagnosis is anxiety disorder and depression. I was diagnosed in 2011.
PROJECT 375: What is your biggest success up until now?
DAISY ROMAN: My biggest success up until now would probably be the fact that I’m in school. I wanted to give up so many times because of my depression. There’s days when I look back to when my depression was more severe and I’m amazed of how far I’ve come; I’m slowly starting to take control of my life again and not letting anything hold me back, no matter how hard it may be at times. One day at a time!
PROJECT 375: Is there one common misperception you’ve come across as it relates to mental health?
DAISY ROMAN: One common misperception that I’ve came across would probably be that I’m crazy. Because of my anxiety, I get really anxious being in a car while someone else is driving. I’m the backseat driver and those people that have been in a car with me have heard me say things like “watch out for that car” or “you’re driving too close.” Someone always tells me that I’m crazy and that they don’t like being in the same vehicle as me. It stinks! They don’t completely understand my fear and that I can’t control it no matter how hard I bite my tongue. My fear and anxiety don’t make me crazy at all! I just hope others can understand that and stop using the word ‘crazy’ to explain my actions.
PROJECT 375: What’s one thing you are truly passionate about?
DAISY ROMAN: I am definitely passionate about education. I enjoy learning new things and using what I learn in relation to the real world. There’s power in knowledge! My favorite subjects are anatomy and public health. I am amazed by the human body and all that it is capable of doing and handling. I find it beautiful that all of our tissues, organs, muscles, etc., are capable of working together so that we can run marathons, swim, or dance! It’s amazing, and it influenced my choice of becoming a physical therapist – I have a couple more years to go. I also like public health. After taking courses revolving around public health, I even considered it a career choice. I enjoy learning about new policies and finding out how those new policies have an impact on my family and me.
PROJECT 375: If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
DAISY ROMAN: If I could live anywhere I would have to say Spain or Italy. I don’t know much about their culture but their food is delicious! I’ve seen pictures of both countries and it is so beautiful! And of course, I would like to learn the languages and learn how to cook the food. Spain and Italy have a calming affect on me. I would like to visit both and then pick one depending on which one I enjoy more.
